Box Office: 'Aquaman' Swims Past $200M Domestic And $800M Worldwide

Aquaman swam past the $200 million mark at the domestic box office yesterday. The DC Films flick earned $16.7m on Tuesday (+66% from Monday and -24% from last Tuesday) to bring its 12-day domestic cume to $216.285m. That's a big jump which puts it just over (sans inflation and deep breath) Superman Returns ($200m in 2006), Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($202m in 2014), Batman Begins ($206m in 2005), Thor: The Dark World ($206m in 2013, Sherlock Holmes ($209m in 2009), Venom ($213m), Solo: A Star Wars Story ($213m) and Ant-Man and the Wasp ($216m). It'll pass Mission: Impossible – Fallout ($220m) today and is now officially WB's biggest domestic (> A Star Is Born) and worldwide (> Ready Player One) release of 2018.

Where it goes from here is the big question. If it holds tight (or doesn’t drop exceptionally hard), taking advantage of the relative lack of “big” newbies between now and M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass on January 18, it could leg it out to something over/under Man of Steel’s $291 million domestic total. Heck, a 50% drop this weekend still gets it close to $260m by Sunday. With that New Year's jump, we may be talking about a total between Man of Steel and Deapool 2 ($325m), but ask me again on Sunday.

There is nothing out there between now and Glass on January 18, so it's just a matter of maintaining momentum and audiences understandably using the gap to catch up with Bumblebee, Mary Poppins, Spider-Verse or the various Oscar contenders.  Oh, and James Wan may become the first “Hollywood” filmmaker to have two ¥2 billion-grossing movies in China. It has earned $277 million in China thus far, becoming the fifth-biggest Hollywood import ever behind Transformers: Age of Extinction ($320m in 2014), Avengers: Infinity War ($359m in 2018), Furious 7 ($391m in 2015) and Fate of the Furious ($388m in 2017, but actually more in local currency than Furious 7).


Yes, Aquaman has passed Venom. Oh, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has earned $56 million thus far in China, making it China’s biggest Hollywood toon of 2018. China likes their superhero movies to be overtly weird and fantastical. That’s a good thing. Aquaman has earned $606m overseas for a new $822m global cume. A total above the $873m cume of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (and the $855m cume of Venom) may come as early as tomorrow.  So, come what may, Aquaman will be the biggest DC Films flick in global grosses.

Once it hits $874 million, Warner Bros.' Jason Momoa/Amber Heard underwater actioner will be the third-biggest DC Comics adaptation behind The Dark Knight ($1.004b in 2008 and sans China or 3-D) and The Dark Knight Rises ($1.084b in 2012, sans 3-D). If it passes Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ($962m in 2017), it’ll be the biggest non-Walt Disney and non-Universal/Comcast release since Paramount/Viacom's Transformers: Age of Extinction ($1.1b) in 2014. And if it does sail over the $1b mark, it’ll be the first non-Disney/non-Universal flick to do so in 4.5 years. I thought we were going to have to wait until Wonder Woman 1984 for such a thing.
