'Aquaman' Could Be The Second-Biggest Superhero Movie In History

As Warner Bros.' Aquaman continues to rule the box office on its way toward a $1+ billion worldwide cume, it has already become the biggest film of the DC shared cinematic universe. With $940+ million in global receipts, James Wan's superhero blockbuster starring Jason Momoa in the title role has already passed the previous five DCEU releases, with no sign of slowing down anytime soon. The film has set several records during its tremendous holiday season release, and will set even more before the dust settles. It's possible that by the end of its run, Aquaman could be the second-highest grossing solo superhero movie of all time.

Superhero cinema has been big business for years now, dominating the annual box office and holding four of the top 10 spots on the all-time worldwide box office list. Aquaman will become the tenth superhero picture to top $1 billion in theaters. How high up that list of superhero movies it climbs, however, remains to be seen, but there's no doubt now that it will be in the elite tier.

Aquaman is currently the sixth-highest grossing solo superhero movie in history, behind Black Panther, Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Dark Knight. Next weekend it will pass The Dark Knight to become the fifth-highest grossing solo superhero movie, and by the end of its run it will be at least either the third- or fourth-highest grossing. It will only need to top Iron Man 3's $1.214 billion total to take the #2 spot on the all-time list of highest-grossing solo superhero films.

If we also include Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers, and Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as Incredibles 2 (an animated team-up movie), then Aquaman is already the tenth-highest grossing superhero movie ever produced.

So if Aquaman does top $1.214 billion, then it will be one of the top-5 highest grossing live-action superhero films, behind only Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Black Panther. That's pretty impressive company to keep. And in terms of all film genres, Aquaman will end its run among the top 20 biggest films in history.

At this point, a sequel would seem inevitable. Aquaman has instantly become one of the biggest brands in cinema, with only Batman and Black Panther putting up comparable numbers for their solo stories. And Wan's film perfectly sets up a sequel, with plenty of great storytelling potential from the source material to inspire another blockbuster hit. Perhaps Siren -- Mera's sister -- will team up with Black Manta, or maybe Charydbis will show up to deprive Aquaman of his powers and hand. Another option might be Deep Six, a super-villain team of half-fish half-human creatures.

There's lots of options that provide terrific story concepts, and they'd translate into more amazing visuals in a film. With Aquaman destined to be a $1+ billion winner, I've no doubt one or more of these sequel ideas will eventually makes it way to the big screen.

However, we can't entirely discount the possibility that Warner's longterm plans for their DC properties might include a painful decision to let only the currently in-development projects play out, and then fully reboot the entire DCEU. With Shazam! releasing later this year, followed by Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey in 2020, it's possible that the next two years will see a winding down of the existing DCEU to make way for a brand new shared world featuring new iterations of Supergirl, Batman, a rebooted Suicide Squad, Batgirl, and more.

That said, my guess is we'll see an Aquaman sequel and a third Wonder Woman movie too, since it would be crazy to leave billions of dollars on the table when it's easy enough to just keep these series separate from one another unless/until it's apparent a team-up or crossover will be a big success. There's no reason a few more DCEU films featuring the current version of characters can't be made if they clearly have strong potential to become blockbusters that increase public interest and attendance at DC movies.

So fret not, fans, for now the DCEU continues apace and is enjoying its biggest success to date, with plenty of reason to expect further success in the coming years.Box office figures and tallies based on data via Box Office Mojo , Rentrak, and TheNumbers.
